Martin Freeman is a Daddy in First Trailer for Zombie Thriller 'Cargo'

Cargo Trailer

"You're the first people I've seen. You're the first people… who are still people." The first Australian trailer has debuted for a dramatic horror thriller titled Cargo, from directors Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke. Even though this seems like a horror comedy, it's actually more of an intense thriller. Martin Freeman stars as a father trying to save his child at all costs in a post-apocalyptic world. The film's full cast includes Anthony Hayes, Susie Porter, Caren Pistorius, Kris McQuade, Natasha Wanganeen, Bruce R. Carter, Simone Landers, and David Gulpilil. As wacky as the pitch for this might seem, it looks like an engaging, suspenseful zombie flick. I'm also glad this trailer isn't from America, because they would never allow this much blood, but it's just naturally a part of the movie so it's all over the footage, of course. Enjoy.

Here's the first Australian trailer (+ poster) for Ben Howling & Yolanda Ramke's Cargo, from YouTube:

Cargo Poster

Cargo is a post apocalyptic thriller and an emotional story of a father trying to save his child at all costs. Stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic, an infected father desperately searches for a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature. Cargo is co-directed by filmmakers Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke, both making their feature directorial debut after a few short films and other production work previously. The screenplay is written by Yolanda Ramke. This first premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival last year. The film is currently set for release in Australia starting May 17th, but does not have any US release yet. Stay tuned for updates. Who's interested already?

New Red Band Trailer for Action Thriller 'Revenge' with Matilda Lutz

Revenge Trailer

"Never take your mistress on an annual guys' getaway, especially one devoted to hunting - a violent lesson for three wealthy married men." Neon has debuted an official red band trailer for an action thriller titled Revenge, from newcomer Coralie Fargeat making her feature directorial debut. This played to some rave reviews at Fantastic Fest and TIFF last year, and seems like a gritty film with a helluva pitch (see the one-line synopsis at the start of this post). Matilda Lutz stars as Jen, with a cast including Kevin Janssens, Vincent Colombe, and Guillaume Bouchède. It's described as a "razor-sharp feminist subversion of the revenge-thriller", that "gloriously blurs the lines of vengeance and survival while simultaneously delivering a ferocious dissection of gender and genre." Sounds awesome, doesn't it? Yes, you might want to take a look.

Here's the official red band trailer (+ original trailer / poster) for Coralie Fargeat's Revenge, on YouTube:

Revenge Poster

Jen (fearlessly embodied by Matilda Lutz) is enjoying a romantic getaway with her wealthy boyfriend which is suddenly disrupted when his sleazy friends arrive for an unannounced hunting trip. Tension mounts in the house until the situation abruptly––and viciously––intensifies, culminating in a shocking act that leaves Jen left for dead. Unfortunately for her assailants, Jen survives and reemerges with a relentless, wrathful intent: revenge. Revenge is written and directed by up-and-coming French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat (follow her @coraliefargeat), making her feature directorial debut after a few short films previously. This first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and Fantastic Fest last year. Neon will release Fargeat's Revenge in select theaters + on VOD starting May 11th coming up. What do you think? Trailer for Spike Lee's 'Pass Over' Adapting Antoinette Nwandu's Play

Pass Over Trailer

"What you fix to do today, man?" Amazon Studios has released the first official trailer for the new Spike Lee joint, titled Pass Over, an adaptation of Antoinette Nwandu's stage play. This isn't so much of a movie, Lee has instead decide to film the play as a performance piece, and release it on Amazon that way. Nwandu's Pass Over is a fresh, "provocative riff" on Waiting for Godot, about two boys standing on a Chicago street corner. "As they dream of their promised land, a stranger wanders into their space with his own agenda and derails their plans. Emotional and lyrical, Pass Over crafts everyday profanities into poetic and humorous riffs, exposing the unquestionable human spirit of young men stuck in a cycle just looking for a way out." Starring Blake DeLong, Ryan Hallahan, Jon Michael Hill, Julian Parker. This looks quite brilliant.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Spike Lee's Pass Over, direct from YouTube (via SlashFilm):

Pass Over Poster

Moses and Kitch, two young black men, chat their way through a long, aimless day on a Chicago street corner. Periodically ducking bullets and managing visits from a genial but ominous stranger and an overtly hostile police officer, Moses and Kitch rely on their banter to get them through a day that is a hopeless retread of every other day, even as they continue to dream of their deliverance. Pass Over is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Spike Lee, of films including Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Clockers, He Got Game, 25th Hour, Inside Man, Red Hook Summer, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Chi-Raq, and Rodney King previously. The film is also co-directed by Danya Taymor, produced by Spike Lee, and adapted from Antoinette Nwandu's acclaimed stage play of the same name - first produced in 2017. Amazon will be premiering Spike Lee's Pass Over streaming exclusively starting April 20th this spring. First impression?

Full US Trailer for Cute Japanese Anime Musical Film 'Lu Over the Wall'

Lu Over the Wall Trailer

"Everyone, friends! Everyone, friends!" GKids has released the US trailer for the extremely cute, Japanese anime musical Lu Over the Wall, which won Grand Prize at the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival, and played at the London Film Festival last year. From Japanese anime filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, "Devilman: Crybaby"), this "joyously hallucinogenic" film is about a lonely, awkward musician boy in a small Japanese town on the water. One day he meets and befriends a mermaid who loves to dance to the music he creates with his band. This sets off all kinds of problems in the village, where they're afraid that mermaids bring disaster. The voice cast includes Kanon Tani, Shôta Shimoda, Shin'ichi Shinohara, and Akira Emoto. However, the US release is an English dubbed version, for those thinking of seeing this. I caught this film in London and did not like it at all, very messy and incoherent and way too long. Have fun.

Here's the official US trailer (+ teasers / poster) for Masaaki Yuasa's Lu Over the Wall, from YouTube:

Lu Over the Wall Poster

Kai is talented but adrift, spending his days sulking in a small fishing village after his family moves from Tokyo. His only joy is uploading songs he writes to the internet. When his classmates invite him to play keyboard in their band, their practice sessions bring an unexpected guest: Lu, a young mermaid whose fins turn to feet when she hears the beats, and whose singing causes humans to compulsively dance – whether they want to or not. As Kai spends more time with Lu, he finds he is able to tell her what he is really thinking, and a bond begins to form. But since ancient times, the people in the village have believed that mermaids bring disaster and soon there is trouble between Lu and the townspeople, putting the town in grave danger. Lu Over the Wall is directed by Japanese anime filmmaker Masaaki Yuasa, of the films Mind Game, Genius Party, and Night Is Short Walk on Girl previously. The screenplay is written by Reiko Yoshida and Masaaki Yuasa. This first premiered at the Annecy Animation Festival last summer. GKids will release Yuasa's Lu Over the Wall in theaters nationwide starting May 11th this summer. Who's interested?

Review: Spielberg's 'Ready Player One' is a World of Pure Imagination

Ready Player One Review

In a legendary career spanning more than four decades, Steven Spielberg changed the film industry with his influential science fiction and adventure movies. Timeless films, such as Jaws (1975), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993), are revered as archetypes of contemporary Hollywood escapist cinema. Along with other pop culture touchstones of the era, like Star Wars (1977) and Superman: The Motion Picture (1978), Spielberg's movies paved the way for the massive blockbusters that now dominate the box office year-round. With his new film, the unabashedly entertaining Ready Player One, Spielberg adapts author Ernie Cline's NY Times bestseller, a love letter to the 1980s that would not exist without the director's unparalleled output.

Set in the year 2045 - the world is a harsh place, beset by unemployment, poverty, overcrowding, and utter hopelessness. 18-year-old Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan of Mud and X-Men: Apocalypse) lives with his aunt and her deadbeat boyfriend in a rundown vertical trailer park in Columbus, Ohio, called the Stacks. The only time he truly feels alive is when he escapes to the "OASIS", an immersive virtual universe where most of humanity spend their days. As Wade says, "People come to the OASIS for all the things they can do. But they stay because of all the things they can be." Once in, he disappears into his avatar, Parzival, a name inspired by the knight who found the Holy Grail. Parzival is everything he isn't: confident, brave, resourceful.

The OASIS was created by the late James Halliday (Mark Rylance,, of Bridge of Spies, The BFG, Dunkirk), an eccentric genius who left his immense fortune and ownership of the OASIS to the winner of Halliday's Easter Egg Hunt, a three-part contest he designed to find a worthy heir. Wade idolizes Halliday and has devoted countless hours to studying every detail of the video game developer's life, looking for any insight that might help him in his quest to be first to the Egg. When he finally conquers the first challenge, he and his friends attract the attention of Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI), a rival corporation that creates all the hardware and gear you need to be able to play in the OASIS. Sorrento has recruited an army of players, called the Sixers, to find Halliday's Easter Egg so he can take control and monetize Halliday's brainchild.

Ready Player One Review

Set to a soundtrack of 1980's hits like Van Halen's "Jump", Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover", and “Blue Monday” by New Order, Ready Player One mainlines the zeitgeist of the '80s with Steven Spielberg's signature sense of wonder and visual inventiveness. Any doubts about Spielberg's ability to make a compelling adaptation of Cline's novel are dispelled in the film's first action sequence. Parzival competes in a dizzying, full-throttle race through the OASIS in Doc Brown's DeLorean from Back to the Future alongside other iconic vehicles like Bigfoot, the Batmobile, Stephen King's Christine, and Shōtarō Kaneda's motorcycle from the anime Akira. The track is littered with obstacles, from wrecking balls and gnarly Hot Wheels-inspired ramp jumps to rampaging monsters like King Kong and the Tyrannosaurus Rex from Jurassic Park. It's the perfect toy box for Spielberg to play in.

In the hands of a lesser filmmaker, the never-ending barrage of pop culture references and video game imagery would feel like overkill, but Spielberg strikes the perfect balance. He knows precisely when to pull back from the CGI spectacle to focus on the characters — especially the tumultuous, budding romance between Parzival and fellow gamer Art3mis (Olivia Cooke, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl). In-between thrilling action sequences and intimate character moments, Spielberg finds room for social commentary, too. It's a blessing to be able to escape this bleak reality, but in doing so, humans are depriving themselves of real contact. The virtual bond between Parzival and Art3mis spills over into the real world and gives them something to fight for; something they can feel without a rig full of sensors and displays. It's the heart of the movie, and the always sentimental Spielberg knows when to tug at those heartstrings for maximum effect.

I love the way Spielberg and director of photography Janusz Kaminski (Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan) employ different techniques to create a visual dichotomy between the OASIS and the dystopian reality of 2045. The OASIS is an intense visual experience with a vibrant color palette, while the real world is desaturated and depressing. As the action moves from the artificial realm to the physical world, Spielberg switches from filming digitally to shooting on film. There are some surreal moments here – by far some of the wildest, most out-there stuff Spielberg has ever done – like a mind-boggling sequence in which Parzival and his companions find themselves inside an iconic '80s horror movie I dare not spoil. The visual effects wizards at ILM and Digital Domain recreate the environments and characters of this beloved film perfectly – it's pure movie magic. It's easily one of the most entertaining scenes in any Spielberg movie.

There are a couple of things that don't work in the movie, however, mainly TJ Miller's computer-generated bounty hunter, i-R0k. I don't find Miller amusing in the slightest and after the recent sexual assault allegations, it's surprising (and problematic) that Spielberg didn't bring in another actor to voice the character, especially when you consider the lengths Ridley Scott went to in order to replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in last year's All the Money in the World. Miller adds nothing to the movie – he only hurts it – so why keep him in it?

Ready Player One Review

Otherwise, the performances are pretty solid. You can tell Mendelsohn enjoys playing the villain, but his performance doesn't offer anything we haven't seen in previous roles, like Rogue One's Orsen Krennic or The Dark Knight Rises’ John Daggett. Sheridan carries the film in a dual role, bringing life to both Wade and Parzival in ways that are contrasting and complimentary. This is the 21-year-old's best performance since Mud, and I hope we get to see him work with Spielberg again. Likewise, Olivia Cooke and supporting actors Lena Waithe, Win Morisaki, and Philip Zhao manage their dual roles nicely, delivering heart and humor in equal measure. Perhaps the most significant standout, however, is Mark Rylance as James Halliday. Rylance, who collaborated with Spielberg on Bridge of Spies and The BFG, brings the eccentric offspring of Willy Wonka and Steve Jobs lovingly to life with vulnerability and a kind of terminal shyness.

When Ready Player One was first published in 2011, it became a cultural phenomenon, praised by NPR, USA Today, The A.V. Club, and others. Huffington Post called it "the grown-up's Harry Potter." But now, years later, it's cool to hate Cline's innocuous, nostalgia-invoking fantasy. The source material has its issues, no doubt, but the script, written by Zak Penn (The Avengers, X2: X-Men United) and Cline, improves upon the book in nearly every way and makes it a truly visual experience. Interestingly enough, it's cool to hate Spielberg these days, too. Since 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the filmmaker has been labeled as out of touch – better suited for stodgy historical dramas like War Horse and Lincoln instead of the big, blockbuster moviemaking that made his name. Ready Player One proves that not only does Spielberg still have it, but when he's on his game, no one even comes close.

At one point in the movie, Wade tells Sorrento that he knows the difference between a fanboy and a hater – noting that Sorrento is a hater with no real appreciation of the world James Halliday built; he only wants to exploit it. That kind of sums up the experience of watching Ready Player One. If you're a hater, you'll find a million reasons to hate this movie. However, if you're a pop culture enthusiast who, like Wade, embraces nostalgia and escapist entertainment to avoid an increasingly bleak reality, you will no doubt appreciate the imaginative virtual world Spielberg and company have created.

Ready Player One is an absolute joy; a big-hearted cinematic treasure hunt that rewards multiple viewings. See it on the biggest, loudest movie screen possible and lose yourself for two hours and twenty minutes in the OASIS, where you can go anywhere, do anything, and be anyone.

Full Trailer for Stylish Assassin Thriller 'Terminal' with Margot Robbie

Terminal Trailer

"Follow me down the rabbit hole…!" RLJE Film has released the full-length trailer for a very twisted, crazy cool, super stylish new assassins film called Terminal, formerly known as End of the Line in production. We previewed a teaser last week, but this full trailer is a must see, this looks unlike anything else this year. The film is the feature debut of director Vaughn Stein, and it stars Margot Robbie, as well as Simon Pegg, Mike Myers, Max Irons, and Dexter Fletcher. I can't really paraphrase this since it's just perfect, so here's the plot straight up: "Terminal follows two assassins with a sinister mission, a fatally ill teacher, an enigmatic janitor and a waitress with a double life. Murderous consequences unravel as their lives meet at the hands of a criminal mastermind wanting revenge." Damn this looks like a cinematic delight. See below.

Here's the new full-length trailer (+ poster) for Vaughn Stein's Terminal, direct from RLJE's YouTube:

Terminal Poster

You can still watch the short teaser trailer for Stein's Terminal here, to see a different introduction to this.

In the dark heart of a sprawling, anonymous city, Terminal follows the twisting tales of two assassins carrying out a sinister mission, a teacher battling a fatal illness, an enigmatic janitor and a curious waitress leading a dangerous double life. Murderous consequences unravel in the dead of night as their lives all intertwine at the hands of a mysterious criminal mastermind hell-bent on revenge. Terminal is both written and directed by filmmaker Vaughn Stein, making his feature directorial debut after working for over a decade as an assistant director in Hollywood. The film has not premiered at any film festivals yet. RLJE will release Stein's Terminal in select theaters starting May 11th this summer. Who's down for this?

Ethan Hawke in First Trailer for A24's Religious Drama 'First Reformed'

First Reformed Trailer

"It's been a while since we've talked. Even a pastor needs a pastor." A24 has debuted the first official trailer for the indie drama First Reformed, which premiered at the Venice / Telluride / Toronto trifecta of film festivals last fall. And you need to see this trailer. First Reformed stars Ethan Hawke as a middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York, dealing with a spiritual identity crisis. The film's cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Michael Gaston, Cedric the Entertainer, Van Hansis, Philip Ettinge, Victoria Hill, and Satchel Eden Bell. Described as a "a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political, and planetary." This had some mixed reviews coming out of the festivals last fall, but it looks darn good from this fine trailer here. I mean really: Hawke at his best, amazing cinematography, just the right amount of melodramatic spunk. I need to see this - what an excellent trailer.

Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Paul Schrader's First Reformed, from A24's YouTube:

First Reformed Poster

Reverend Ernst Toller (Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in an act of grandiose violence. First Reformed is both written and directed by veteran American filmmaker Paul Schrader, director of films including Blue Collar, Hardcore, American Gigolo, Cat People, Light of Day, The Comfort of Strangers, Light Sleeper, Forever Mine, Auto Focus, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, The Walker, Adam Resurrected, The Canyons, The Dying of the Light, and Dog Eat Dog previously. This first premiered at the Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals last year. A24 will release Schrader's First Reformed in select theaters starting on May 18th this summer.
